Systems-based practice involves understanding the healthcare system and how it affects patient care. There are multiple factors that affect care, so it is important for advanced practice nurses to understand policies, utilize resources, collaborate with other disciplines, advocate for patients, and maintain quality and safety. Through clinical experiences, I have witnessed providers utilizing all resources available, especially for patients with low income. I have also witnessed interprofessional collaboration and patient advocacy to ensure best possible outcomes. Growth in this area means gaining more awareness of resources available to patients, even if the resources are outside of the care that I can provide.
