Interprofessional collaboration is used in all areas of nursing and healthcare. Because health is multifaceted, multiple disciplinaries are needed to provide the highest quality of care with the best possible outcomes. In my clinical experiences, I have witnessed interprofessional collaboration numerous times. At the practice, there are multiple nurse practitioners, licensed therapists, clinical staff, and a provider that specializes in obesity management. Mental health care requires multiple subspecialties, such as weight management and therapy. The nurse practitioners provide medication management while the licensed therapists can provide more intense therapy, such as cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). Some patients need obesity management because depression and obesity go hand-in-hand. I have gained experience in working with these different disciplinaries by collaborating with them myself or by shadowing the practitioners and therapists. An area of growth for me would be collaborating with supervising physicians, as nurse practitioners in Tennessee require physician oversight. I will continue to strengthen my communication and teamwork skills to improve patient outcomes and foster positive team dynamics.
