Person-centered care is, in my opinion, the core of nursing. As nurses, we treat the whole person, not just a set of symptoms. Treating the whole person means keeping them at the center of care and treatment. Nursing care is individualized based on patient needs and/or wants. Each person has the right to make his or her own decisions about care and treatment. During my time in clinical, I have gained a greater understanding of person-centered care. Mental health care is very individualized. Which medications and therapies are effective for one may not be effective for the next. It is imperative to keep the focus on the patient to give them the best possible outcomes. A weakness I possess in this area is treating patients that have values that align differently from mine. While I treat all patients with the same dignity, respect, and kindness, I find it difficult at times when patients express conflicting views. I have gained experience in this while sitting in on group therapy sessions where most of the patients have opposing views from my own. I know to navigate this I must remain unbiased and continue to treat all patients equally.
