I have been a follower of Christ since I was 5 years old. Incorporating Christian values into my personal and professional lives is very important to me. I believe that nursing is a calling from the Lord, to be His hands and feet caring for others. For that reason, I strive to provide the best care to my patients in my current role as a pediatric nurse, and I plan to integrate this care as I transition to the role of PMHNP.

"I press toward the high calling of God in Christ Jesus." Philippians 3:14 KJV

Integrity

"Let integrity and uprightness preserve me; for I wait on thee." Psalm 25:21 KJV

I strive to live with integrity in every aspect of my life and especially in the nursing profession. I believe we should always do what is right, even when nobody is watching. As Christians, we know that God sees and knows all, so He will know if we are walking with integrity, even if others do not see it. I practice integrity everyday as a nurse, and I will continue when I become a PMHNP by treating every patient with respect, dignity, honesty, and always striving to do what is right.

Commitment

"Commit thy works unto the Lord, and thy thoughts shall be established."

Proverbs 16:3 KJV

I am very committed and passionate about working with pediatrics in the nursing profession, and I plan to bring that same level of commitment as I become a PMHNP.

Service

"For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another." Galatians 5:13 KJV

The Bible says we are to serve the Lord and serve others in love. The nursing profession is all about serving others. We do this every day by putting others' needs above our own. I practice this now as a pediatric nurse by serving my patients with the best care than I know how to give, and I will continue serving my patients as a PMHNP.

Accountability

“Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend.”

Proverbs 27:17 KJV

The Bible teaches us to hold one another accountable, as stated here in Proverbs. The Bible also tells us to confess our faults one to another in James 5:16. We are to hold each other accountable as nurses and ensure that each one is always doing what is right. I practice accountability in my own life, my profession, and with my coworkers. I plan to hold myself accountable, as well as my coworkers.

Civility

“Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves.” Philippians 2:3 KJV

Civility is about acting with kindness. The Bible teaches us to be kind to all, and I strive to practice this in my everyday life and in my profession. I will carry this kindness with me as I transition to becoming a nurse practitioner.

Compassion

"Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellowservant, even as I had pity on thee?"

Matthew 18:33 KJV

Jesus has compassion on us as sinners, and we ought to have compassion towards one another. Being a nurse takes much compassion to serve others and practice humility. I feel that I practice compassion on my patients, and I will take this compassion with me as a become a PMHNP.

The service learning project that Genesha, Keisha, and I did was educate new mothers on postpartum depression. We did this at a community women's health center in Knoxville, TN. This center provides free classes and other resources for women's health in the Knoxville community. By providing education on postpartum depression, we helped new mothers understand signs/symptoms and when to seek help. Genesha and Keisha worked on the PowerPoint, and I worked on the brochure. We also put together treat bags for the mothers with small notebooks, pens, and Bible verse cards. This project helped enrich my learning by becoming more educated on postpartum depression and increasing my speaking and presenting skills.
