During my time in the PMHNP program at King, I have gained a solid foundation in nursing research and theory that I can directly apply in clinical practice. One of the most applicable theories in my experience is Brenner's Novice to Expert theory (Kilpatrick, 2024). As a pediatric nurse, I have reached expert level in my clinical practice, but transitioning into the role of PMHNP means starting as a novice once again. Despite this shift, the knowledge and clinical experience I’ve acquired will serve as a valuable foundation as I move from bedside nurse to psychiatric-mental health nurse practitioner. I feel confident in my strengths in assessment and diagnosing mental health disorders, which will be vital in my new role. My current area of growth is in psychopharmacology, but I am committed to expanding my knowledge in this area. Through ongoing research and evidence-based practice, I am confident that I will gain the expertise necessary to prescribe and manage medications effectively, ensuring the best outcomes for my patients.
