Population health focuses on health outcomes, social determinants of health, and interventions for various populations, rather than just individuals. In my clinical experiences, I have gained a better understanding of how certain factors affect patient outcomes. Many of the patients we have treated live in rural Virginia, which sometimes means limited access to care. Telehealth has provided an alternate means of mental health care for patients who otherwise may not have that opportunity. Another factor affecting patient health is insurance. I was able to see the behind-the-scenes work that goes into working with insurance and getting patients approved for treatments. Some private insurances require prior authorizations and multiple appeals to obtain approval for certain medications and treatments, such as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS). Other insurances like Medicaid and the VA usually pay 100%, and the patient owes nothing out-of-pocket. Seeing these factors first-hand has been a great experience and will help me as I step into the role of practitioner. A way that I can continue to grow in this area is to expand my knowledge of community resources to improve patient outcomes and ensure health equality.
